COVID-19 Immunity Passport to Ease Travel Restrictions?

Abstract: ‘Immunity passport’ (also called ''immunity certificate'' or ''immunity license'' has been suggested to certify traveler’ protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Some data have demonstrated development of neutralizing antibodies that may protect against reinfection and reduce disease severity in the short-term, and some tests correlate with virus neutralization. More evidence is needed on serologies for such certification to facilitate travel, to protect travelers and their destination countries.

“…Since early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been suggested that serological tests could be used to issue so-called 'immunity passports' [18][19][20]. This has caused heated discussions about potential ethical, equitable and legal implications as well as public health ramifications due to potentially increased/encouraged risky behavior by 'immunity passport' holders [17,21].…”

“…As countries take tentative steps towards the relaxation of stringent border control measures, the future landscape of international travel is being hotly debated [104]. Inevitably, travellers with pre-existing conditions will face uncertainty about their medical fitness to fly in particular until, or if, an effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 has been developed.…”

“…The concept of an ‘immunity passport’ has been advanced, whereby serologic evidence of SARS-CoV-2 antibody production indicates immunity to a second infection. 2 In the case of international travel, such ‘risk-free certificates’ could reassure an anxious travelling public and potentially satisfy national border control requirements. Immunity passports already exist in public health and travel medicine.…”
