The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a significant shift towards modular distance learning in education systems worldwide. In the Philippines, the Department of Education has developed Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) to ensure quality primary education for all learners during the pandemic. This research study aims to identify the challenges and effectiveness of the modular distance learning approach on the academic performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students at Botolan National High School. Employing a descriptive research design, data were collected through a validated questionnaire and analyzed using weighted arithmetic mean, frequency, percentage distribution, and Pearson-r correlation. The study found that the majority of student-respondents were female, aged 17.31 years old, and achieved very satisfactory academic grades. The students perceived the modular distance learning approach as agreeable, with self-motivation being the most challenging aspect. The ability to express ideas was the most effective aspect, while the ability to answer without pressure was the least effective. The study found no significant relationship between student's perceptions of the modular distance learning approach and their academic performance. Based on the findings, the study recommends using the modular distance learning approach and developing policies to address students' mental health issues. Furthermore, further research is needed to investigate teacher readiness and technology competency, as well as other variables not covered in this study, to improve the effectiveness of the modular distance learning approach. The study demonstrates that despite the limitations caused by the pandemic, modular distance learning can be an efficient alternative to traditional face-to-face education.

ObjectiveTo explore the effect of the application of the ‘Internet+’ nursing teaching mode on the comprehensive teaching ‘Fundamentals of Nursing’.Trial designParallel design and convenient sampling were used to select vocational nursing students from the Nursing College of Capital Medical University.MethodsSelected students were randomly divided into two groups. The control group consisted of 30 students in Grade 2020 higher vocational nursing education (traditional teaching mode). The observation group consisted of 30 students in Grade 2021 higher vocational nursing education (Internet+ mixed teaching mode). Training assessment results, automatic learning ability, professional identity, and satisfaction were compared between the two groups.ResultsCompared with the control group, the students in the observation group scored higher in the following operation practices: venous blood sampling, intradermal injection, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), sputum aspiration, and putting on and taking off robes (84.01 ± 0.87 vs. 92.14 ± 1.23; 91.41 ± 0.82 vs. 96.86 ± 0.27; 87.56 ± 0.31 vs. 93.91 ± 2.79; 88.11 ± 0.51 vs. 93.75 ± 0.29; and 82.29 ± 0.29 vs. 90.96 ± 0.34, respectively, with p < 0.05 for all scores). The total scores for autonomous learning ability and subjective satisfaction were also higher in the observation group compared with the control group (82.98 ± 4.72 vs. 93.17 ± 5.01 and 96.67% vs. 90.00%, respectively, with p < 0.05 for all scores).ConclusionIn the post-epidemic era, the ‘Internet+ hybrid teaching mode’ was applied to comprehensive nursing teaching. This changed the traditional education mode, which focuses only on professional knowledge. The ‘Internet+’ teaching mode results showed that the professional, ideological, and political courses exhibited the same value guidance, which improved students’ independent learning ability, practical operation ability, professional identity, and satisfaction.

Adaptation Plan to the Virtual Modality in the Nursing Career of a University in Northeastern Peru

Objective: Describe the implementation of a plan for the adaptation of courses to the virtual modality in the nursing career of a private university in northeastern Peru in 2020. Theoretical Framework: The process of adaptation to virtuality is supported by connectivist and constructivist and instructivist theories of education. Method: This descriptive case study involved 83 students and 11 teachers. The plan consisted of 5 phases: selection of subjects, choice of teaching tools and resources, adaptation of subjects, implementation of the pedagogical strategy, and control and monitoring of courses. Results and Discussion: Of 30 adapted subjects, 66.7% had theoretical and practical hours and 33.3% only theoretical hours. Supervisions of the virtual classrooms showed deficiencies in sending announcements (73%) and aggregating learning sessions (45%). To address the challenges, communication strategies, technological and academic support, and flexibility of evaluation methods were used. Teachers' technological knowledge was rated as the lowest, with a mean of 2.64 ± 0.44. 94% of students attended classes and 80.7% passed the courses. Research Implications: The implementation of the plan allowed students to continue their learning during the pandemic, highlighting the need to improve strategies to achieve effective virtual education. Originality/Value: This study will not only allow us to know how Peruvian universities responded to the educational crisis during the pandemic, but could also ensure the sustainability of education in these new paradigms.
