COVID‐19 is an emergent disease of aging

Abstract: Our society faces unprecedented challenges as the global pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads around the world, with more than 12.5 million cases and 550,000 deaths reported ("WHO", 2020). The disease is caused by an enveloped single-stranded positive RNA virus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2 (Wu, Zhao, et al., 2020). In contrast to other coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2 has the ability to infiltrate the lower respiratory tract resulting in severe lung damage… Show more

“…Case fatality rates (CFR) accelerate with age in the case of COVID-19, stroke, and probably other diseases. The characteristic doubling rate in the case of COVID-19 is reported in [ 39 ] as 6−9 years. Our estimation from the figure in [ 40 ] yielded ≈10 years for the doubling rate for one-year survival of stroke patients.…”

“…Of relevance, mortality attributable to COVID-19 complications is higher in this age group, and age increases the likelihood of developing the symptomatic disease and increased disease severity [ 34 , 35 ]. Nevertheless, the association with older age could have different meanings depending on the number of comorbidities, with some reports labeling COVID-19 as an age-related disease [ 36 ]. Our data demonstrate that the spatial spread of COVID-19 has a relationship with population aging structures, a concept that must be explored in this setting to obtain population-specific estimates and lethality and which could represent a significant structural inequality related to COVID-19 burden [ 37 ].…”

“…It is not surprising that age may represent the most significant risk factor for death due to COVID-19, 89 , 90 taken into account that also prior human coronaviruses and influenza viruses have been known to impact older people disproportionately. 91 There are very few studies that connect the known mechanisms of aging to the pathogenesis of viruses.…”
