COVID-19 mortality in Brazil, 2020-21: consequences of the pandemic inadequate management

Abstract: Background The COVID-19 pandemic brought countless challenges to public health and highlighted the Brazilian health system vulnerabilities in facing the emergency. In this article, we analyze data on COVID-19-related deaths in 2020-21 to show the epidemic consequences in Brazil. Methods The Mortality Information System and the Live Birth Information System were the primary information sources. We used population estimates in 2020-21 to calculate CO… Show more

“…The lack of massive testing contributed to the devasting SARS-CoV-2 epidemic outcome in the country. 1 Despite the intense efforts of Brazilian research groups in conducting viral genomic surveillance, 2 the minute Federal resources earmarked for science avoided adequate asymptomatic epidemiological surveillance. 3 The high cellular expression of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor detected in salivary glands and tongue epithelial cells gave the oral cavity the title of the main reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 in the human body.…”

“…Brazil has the fifth highest number of confirmed COVID‐19 cases worldwide and second in deaths, following the USA (WHO, 2023). The lack of massive testing contributed to the devasting SARS‐CoV‐2 epidemic outcome in the country 1 . Despite the intense efforts of Brazilian research groups in conducting viral genomic surveillance, 2 the minute Federal resources earmarked for science avoided adequate asymptomatic epidemiological surveillance 3 …”

“…Such strategies exposed, in particular, the somewhat unexpected size of the political bias regarding the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the mortality rate of COVID-19 in Brazil, surpassing other important epidemiological elements such as the level of poverty and the mutation of the virus. People were constantly persuaded not to adopt restrictive measures [ 25 , 26 ]. Furthermore, the fomentation of anti-COVID-19 measures by the federal government amplified the challenges of monitoring the spread of the virus, to the extent that the daily count of cases and deaths was not properly updated.…”
