COVID-19 related mental health issues: a narrative review of psychometric properties of scales and methodological concerns in scale development

Abstract: Objectives: The global crisis of COVID-19 and its consequential strict public health measures placed around the world have impacted mental health. New scales and tools have been developed to measure these mental health effects. This narrative review assesses the psychometric properties of these scales and tools and methodological aspects of their development. Methods: PubMed, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar were searched for articles published from 15 May 2020 to 15 August 2020. This search used three group… Show more

“…In terms of studies investigating COVID-19-specific correlates of symptom severity, a diverse range of variables was assessed (e.g., COVID-related fear, anxiety, stress, etc. ); however, there was little overlap of measures or constructs across these studies, as has been also reported in the mental health literature more generally (Ransing et al, 2021). The replicability of these findings therefore remains unclear.…”

“…The COVID-19 literature indicates high correlations among several symptoms in a manner that shows that the architecture of the pandemic-related mental health reactions spans over the conventional DSM-5/ICD-11 criteria[ 8 , 65 ]. A recent narrative review of the psychometric qualities of scales noted that the heterogeneous and insufficient description of methods used to assess the psychometric characteristics of these scales may limit their usefulness for clinical and research purposes[ 66 ]. A systematic review focusing on the quality of data collection addressing 37 relevant mental health cross-sectional surveys of the general public (average sample size = 5137) noted a high risk of selection bias[ 67 ].…”

“…In the current pandemic, there is still a lack of robust screening instruments to identify relevant symptoms and contribute to the epidemiological study of COVID-19-related mental health problems (Ransing et al, 2020). Similarly, these instruments should be developed or validated according to the best available methodological practices (Ransing et al, 2021). Hence, the interest arises in testing the existing models in the Mexican population.…”
