COVID-19 vaccination challenges: A mini-review

Abstract: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to the infection of many people across the globe, over six million deaths, and has placed an unprecedented burden on public health worldwide. The pandemic has led to the high-speed development and production of vaccines against the COVID-19, as vaccines can end the pandemic. At the beginning of the program, vaccinations were initially targeted only at high-risk groups, such as the elderly, those with comorbidities, or healthcare workers. Although most of the mentioned popula… Show more

“…In response to the pandemic, numerous containment and mitigation interventions have been put in place to prevent overwhelming healthcare systems and protect vulnerable populations [ 7 ]. Measures, such as social distancing, hand hygiene, masks, quarantines, and lockdowns, have proven effective in reducing SARS-CoV-2 transmission, but vaccination has also played a crucial role in minimizing the risk of serious illnesses from COVID-19 [ 3 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…It has been previously found that mutations induced in the spike protein are chiefly responsible for dampening the effects of vaccines which remain effective for various strains but are most effective for the original strain against which they were made. Thus, it causes a need for booster doses ( 105 ).…”
