Cr-Based II-VI Semimagnetic Semiconductors

Abstract: We review the magnetic and optical properties of recently grown Cr--based II-VI semimagnetic semiconductors. We focus on two features of these materials which distinguish them from other semimagnetic semiconductors: the particular magnetic behaviour of these crystals, resulting from the Cr " ion energy structure determined by a strong, static Jahn-Teller effect, and a ferromagnetic p-d exchange interaction, which is unique for II-VI semimagnetic semiconductors.

“…Fundamentally, the crystal eld spilt ground state of a Co 2+ ion in CdSe (T d symmetry) is a spin quartet 4 A 2 with an electronic conguration e 4 g t 3 2g . 12 Of particular interest is whether the Co ions in the CdSe QD can be regarded as isolated Co ions or as species interacting with the CdSe lattice with some degree of charge transfer between the Co and CdSe QD (i.e. the initial state is a mixture of both 3d 7 and 3d 7 L or 3d 6 L À ).…”

“…Pb 1−x−y−z Mn x Sn y Eu z Te is a unique system in which the interplay between magnetic and electronic properties can be observed and studied. In particular, carrierinduced paramagnet-ferromagnet as well as ferromagnet-spin glass transitions have been observed [1][2][3]. This is due to the combination of an RKKY type of interaction between the magnetic ions with the possibility of manipulating the free carrier concentration.…”
