Crack Failure Characteristics of Different Rocks Under the Action of Frost Heaving of Fissure Water

Abstract: Freeze-thaw problems need to be solved urgently for the construction of projects in the alpine mountain areas. Freeze-thaw cycle tests with different cycles were carried out after water filled in the crack. Combined with the theory of frost heaving mechanics and fracture mechanics, the failure modes and mechanical characteristics of crack growth are analyzed after the freeze-thaw cycle test. The research results showed the crack growth increase with the number of freezing-thawing cycles. Cracked rock failure t… Show more

“…It is evidenced that a huge frost heaving pressure is produced to drive the propagation of voids and joints and thus cause the instability of joint rock masses during the freezing process (Huang et al, 2022(Huang et al, , 2023. Fortunately, the bonding strength between ice and joint wall can strengthen the joints themselves after complete freezing (Matsuoka and Murton, 2008;Zhang et al, 2020;Shan et al, 2021;Wang et al, 2022). However, if the joint ice were thawed, the rock-icerock "sandwich" structure would be debonded and unstable.…”

“…Research has also been conducted on the mechanical properties of fractured rock masses. Zhang et al (2020) combined with the theory of frost heaving mechanics and fracture mechanics, carried out the freeze-thaw cycle test, and analyzed failure modes and mechanical characteristics of crack growth. Li et al (2022) analyzed the influence of prefabricated crack angles on the mechanical properties and failure modes of coal samples under uniaxial compression.…”

“…This nonsynchronous correspondence between time and space makes the failure mechanism of the slope under compound mining unloading more complicated. Therefore, in-depth research on the deformation and fracture characteristics of fractured rock masses under the coupling of heavy rainfall infiltration and mining unloading can ensure the safety and stability of mine slopes (Vandamme and Roegiers, 1990;Shao and Rudnicki, 2000;Tang et al, 2016;Liu et al, 2020b;Yao et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2020;Deng et al, 2021;Liu et al, 2021;Zuo et al, 2021).…”
