Fatigue and rutting are two common damage types in asphalt pavements. Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), as a sustainable approach in the pavement industry, deals with the foregoing damage. Fatigue and rutting characteristics of asphalt pavement are generally assessed using laboratory tests, taking a long time and consuming significant amounts of raw material. This study aims to propose a novel approach for predicting fatigue and rutting performance of RAP mixtures. A new ensemble prediction method, named COA-KNN, is introduced by combining the coyote optimization algorithm and K-nearest neighbor to increase the accuracy of fatigue and rutting prediction. In order to evaluate the accuracy, the proposed method was compared against robust prediction methods, including random forest (RF), gradient boosting (GB), decision tree regression (DT), and multiple linear regression (MLR). Afterward, the influence of each variable on the mentioned damages is examined, and the variables are ranked based on their relative influence on the mentioned damages. The results suggest that COA-KNN outperformed other prediction techniques when comparing different performance indicators. Total binder content in asphalt mixes and the PG span of the virgin binder added to the recycled asphalt mixture had the highest relative influence on fatigue and rutting performance, respectively.

Plain asphalt typically is an insulator to the flow of electric current. It can be modified to conductive asphalt by adding various recyclable and environment-friendly conductive additives in it. Such asphalt can provide smart and multifunctional environmentally sustainable applications in the pavement industry. Its production and performance behavior parameters are, however, yet to be entirely understood. This study presents a review of literature on conductive asphalt using systematic literature review and scientometric analysis techniques to holistically understand conductive asphalt and current research developments in this field. The objective was to perform a critical review and scientometrically characterize the published research studies. Literature was acquired from credible research databases for the study duration from 2009 to 2022, and these were subsequently using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) protocol to identify the most relevant documents. Sixty-two bibliographic articles were consequently selected for the study. Systematic review identified the research themes and techniques adopted in the field of conductive asphalt technology, and the scientometric analysis quantified the characteristics of the articles. VOSViewer was utilized for visualizing the key findings of the quantitative analysis. Development of conductive asphalt has great research potential and improving its piezoresistivity and conductive network is the future research focus of smart asphalt technology. An experimental study was also conducted, and the results were presented. A dataset of 75 Marshall asphalt specimens of various mix proportions was compiled to assess the Marshall parameters, volumetrics, and their electrical resistivity. 60/70 penetration grade bitumen was used along with five waste tire metal fiber based modified asphalt mixes with contents 0%, 0.375%, 0.75%, 1.125%, and 1.5%. This review, along with experimental investigations, provided an in-depth understanding of conductive asphalt concrete’s behavior, the emerging trends to support future studies, and helped to identify the current major research themes and the corresponding challenges.

Developing Balanced Mix Design Gyrations (N_design) for North Dakota’s Hot-Mix Asphalt Pavements

There is a need to develop a new mix design criterion for North Dakota especially for medium- and low-volume traffic pavements, where the durability performance of the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is of the most importance. High Ndesign numbers tend to lower the asphalt binder, thus lowering the durability of the asphalt mix. In contrast, if Ndesign is reduced, it tends to increase the asphalt binder, thus improving the durability of the asphalt mix. The main objective of this study was to develop balanced mix Ndesign values for North Dakota pavements based on the HMA performance with respect to resistance to rutting, low-temperature cracking, and fatigue cracking. Project mix samples were constructed and tested based on Ndesign values of 75, 65, 55, or 50 gyrations. The sample matrix included fine aggregate angularity (FAA) values of 45, 43, and 40, representing high-, medium-, and low-volume pavements, respectively. The matrix also included the asphalt binders PG 58S-28, PG 58H-34, and PG 58H-28. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was done on the performance results and showed that the results corresponding to the various gyration levels were significantly different and can be compared. Test results revealed that a lower number of gyrations and a higher binder content resulted in higher resistance to fatigue and thermal cracking, while rut resistance stayed above acceptable levels. Based on the test results, the authors recommend an Ndesign of 65 gyrations for the high-volume pavements and 50 gyrations for intermediate- and low-volume pavements.
