Cranial Features of the Spotted Seal, Phoca largha, in the Nemuro Strait, Considering Age Effects.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Cranial features (development, individual variation, and sexual dimorphism) were examined from the 23 metrical characters and 2 nonmetrical characters (the degree of closure of the 9 cranial sutures and the presence of sagittal crest) in the two spotted seal specimen groups at the Nemuro Strait, Hokkaido. One specimen group was incidentally taken in the salmon trap nets between 1982 and 1983 (n=70), and the other was randomly sampled by damage control kill between 1997 and 1998 (n=82). The developme… Show more

“…To estimate the age of completion of development for a particular character, we assumed that growth virtually ceased at the age at which length reached 95% of its asymptotic length (t .95 ), following the previous studies [20,37]. We calculated t .95 from the estimates of growth parameters using the monomolecular model [20,24].…”

“…We calculated t .95 from the estimates of growth parameters using the monomolecular model [20,24]. This model has already been successfully used to describe growth of spotted seals, Phoca largha [20], and brown bears, Ursus arctos [24].…”

“…Previous investigations in spotted seals mainly focused on their distribution 6 , 7 , development 8 , and genetic diversity 9 , 10 . To date, only a few studies explored the physiological characteristics of spotted seals at the molecular level.…”

“…In addition, there is limited knowledge about the anatomy of several species (examples of skull descriptions in HOWELL, 1929;SIVERTSEN, 1954;REPENNING et al, 1971;KING, 1983;ANDREESCU;MURARIU, 1985;KASTELEIN;GERRITS, 1990;FERIGOLO, 1996a;MIZUNO;OHTAISHI, 2002;SANFELICE;FERIGOLO, 2008), and the frequent variability in the cranial (NOJIMA, 1990), postcranial (ROBINETTE;STAINS, 1970;ENGLISH, 1977) and dental (DREHMER; FERIGOLO, 1996b;DREHMER et al, 2004;CRUWYS;FRIDAY, 2006;LOCH et al, 2010) character states, which makes it even more difficult to clarify the relationships of this group.…”
