Craniomaxillofacial Trauma: Synopsis of 14,654 Cases with 35,129 Injuries in 15 Years

Abstract: Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma occurs in isolation or in combination with other serious injuries, including intracranial, spinal, and upper- and lower-body injuries. It is a major cause of expensive treatment and rehabilitation requirements, temporary or lifelong morbidity, and loss of human productivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate patterns of CMF trauma in a large patient sample within a 15-year time frame. Between 1991 and 2005, CMF trauma data were collected from 14,654 patients with 35,129 inj… Show more

“…The prevalence of men involved in maxillofacial trauma is strongly supported by previous literature, with male to female ratios ranging between 2:1 to 8:1 (Gandhi et al, 2011;Allareddy et al, 2011;Kostakis et al, 2012;Kraft et al, 2012;Lee, 2012;Mijiti et al, 2014).…”

“…In the literature, maxillofacial fractures occur most frequently in people aged 20e30 years (Al Ahmed et al, 2004;Ansari, 2004;Brasileiro and Passeri, 2006;Al-Khateeb and Abdullah, 2007;Gandhi et al, 2011;Kraft et al, 2012;Lee, 2012;Mijiti et al, 2014). In the EURMAT collaboration, most centres presented a mean age that was included in the decade from 30 to 39 years (Fig.…”

“…3,14,36 The incidence of concomitant injury in the setting of facial fracture has been reported to be between 17.4 and 25.2 percent, including head/neck open wounds, dentoalveolar injury, cerebral injury, cervical spine injury, and extremity fracture. 3,14,36 The relatively high prevalence of serious concomitant injuries serves as a reminder of the acuity of facial fracture patients and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for these patients.…”

“…A significant number of patients require craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery every year for the correction of congenital and acquired condition of head and face [5]. Comparing to computed tomography (CT) that emits harmful ionizing radiation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a safer and non-invasive way to assess CMF anatomy.…”
