Crashworthiness optimal design of a new extruded octagonal multi-cell tube under dynamic axial impact

Abstract: A new extruded octagonal multi-cell tubular energy absorber is developed for improving and enhancing the vehicle crashworthiness. A combined experimental and numerical study is conducted to further assess its performance. In this study, a sled impact test is first performed to investigate the structural response of an octagonal multi-cell tube, and the test data are then used to validate the FE tube model. Using this FE tube model, the effect of key geometric parameters on the structural crashworthiness is ana… Show more

“…The von Mises yield criteria is used to define isotropic yielding. It is should be noted that the 6-series aluminum alloys generally show low strain-rate sensitivity, thus, the strain rate effect is not considered in the FE analysis, similar to literature [52,53].…”

“…Under the dynamic loading conditions, two vehicular components are studied, i.e. the thin-walled Sshaped beam (ShB) discussed in our previous studies [80,81] and thin-walled octagonal multi-cell tube (OMcT) reported in Bai et al [82]. Their geometry parameterization and FE models are illustrated in Figure 5.…”

“…The findings revealed that among the various section shapes examined, the circular tube stands out with the highest EA capacity and average force. Bai et al [10] presented a novel structural configuration for an octagonal energy absorber that incorporated an inner tube, an outer tube, and interconnected webs. Furthermore, in this study, a methodology is introduced utilising a multi-objective optimisation approach.…”
