Creating a Patient Navigation Model to Address Cervical Cancer Disparities in a Rural Hispanic Farmworker Community

Abstract: Summary This report describes the implementation of a pilot patient navigation (PN) program created to address cervical cancer disparities in a predominantly Hispanic agricultural community. Since November 2009, a patient navigator has provided services to patients of Catholic Mobile Medical Services (CMMS). The PN program has resulted in the need for additional clinic sessions to accommodate the demand for preventive care at CMMS.

“…Patient navigators are uniquely situated to intervene to increase both screening and follow-up when a Pap test indicates that follow up is necessary (Paskett et al, 2011a). While evidence surrounding PN programs suggests that positive results can be achieved, the literature also suggests that patient navigator research on a variety of patients across the cancer continuum is still needed (Wells et al, 2012). …”

“…The ultimate goal of the TBCCN is to reduce cancer health disparities among medically and historically underserved populations in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties in Florida. One of TBCCN’s longstanding community partners is CMMS, a faith-based community primary care clinic located in a rural area of Hillsborough County, Florida (Wells et al, 2012). CMMS provides health care to a predominantly Hispanic population.…”

“…Despite the promise of navigation in increasing screening rates in minority populations, there is little research on the use of navigators to increase cancer screening in the Medicare population. The majority of research has tested whether navigation services increase breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening in young and middle‐aged adults …”

“…7 Despite these differences, empirical research suggests that individuals who receive such services are more likely than those who do not to receive timely, age-and sex-appropriate cancer screening. 8 Research also shows that navigation has been effective in increasing cancer screening prevalence in minority populations, including Native Americans, 9 Alaska Natives, 10 Asian Americans, 11,12 Micronesians, 13 Hispanics, 14,15 and African Americans. 5,16 Despite the promise of navigation in increasing screening rates in minority populations, there is little research on the use of navigators to increase cancer screening in the Medicare population.…”
