Creating an Efficient Point-of-Care Ultrasound Workflow

Abstract: A point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) workflow is composed of multiple processes managed by various stakeholders. There are concurrent front and back end steps including: acquiring, archiving and interpreting images; documenting the POCUS study and ultimately coding and billing for the study [1]. An efficient POCUS workflow is important for both patient care and billing [2-4]. Unfortunately, there is no single standard across POCUS programs [5]. Based on our institutional experience, we suggest that programs enga… Show more

“…Though Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) program leaders are generally well versed in POCUS education, they may lack the tools to support the broader implementation of POCUS in the clinical environment. While there is an expanding body of literature on POCUS pedagogy [1][2][3], administrative and logistical elements that are necessary for the widespread adoption of POCUS have received little attention [4,5]. Considering the value proposition of POCUS to enhance patient care [6], we set out to increase the uptake of POCUS by general internists at the Ottawa Hospital, a tertiary care academic center.…”

“…FOCUS workflow is composed of all processes related to acquiring, archiving, and interpretation of images. It also includes documenting the study in the electronic medical record, QI, and finally coding and billing 66. Workflow varies between institutions and can be extremely efficient with a single order populating the patient’s information in the ultrasound machine, flagging the record for QI, and automatic image uploading following acquisition 67,68.…”
