Creating Dynamic Learning Communities in Synchronous Online Courses: One Approach from the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL)

Abstract: The ability to convert face-to-face curricula into rigorous and equally rich online experiences is a topic of much investigation. In this paper, we report on the conversion of a face-to-face research mentor training curriculum into a synchronous, online course. “…Synchronous virtual classrooms can include many technical features that help students connect, including chat rooms, which enable text communication, and breakout rooms, which enable small group discussion. McDaniels, Pfund, and Barnicle (2016) found that these features helped students engage in a variety of ways and increased students' bonds in the virtual classroom. Synchronous learning also creates constraints in relationship to community.…”

“…There is also interest in reviewing practices used in face-toface instruction and methods to convert these tools to the synchronous online learning platform. McDaniels et al (2016) indicated a high student satisfaction with conversion of face-to-face practices (such as introductions) into synchronous online practice. Davey et al (2019) discussed the pedagogical challenges in converting face-to-face courses to online.…”
