Creating Learning Opportunities for Teachers and Students: A Cultural‐Historical Understanding of Classroom Research

Abstract: There is considerable agreement about the fact that the presence of researchers in the classroom mediates teaching and learning. Why should two very different forms of human activity, one designed to study the other, interact and mediate each other? In this article, we propose cultural-historical activity theory as a framework for understanding the opportunities that arise for students and teachers from the presence of researchers in the classroom. From the perspective of cultural-historical activity theory an… Show more

“…CBPR is a collaborative process among researchers and community partners who come together to design and implement research focusing on a concern affecting the community (Hacker, 2013). In school-university CBPR collaborations, researchers are able to approach issues in new ways, generating creative thoughts and new approaches to entrenched problems (Maheux & Roth, 2013), and inform school climate initiatives to support student social-emotional well-being (Mulvaney-Day, Rappaport, Alegria, & Codianne, 2006). Findings from this study are used to explore the application of the trauma-informed Sanctuary Model (Bloom, 1997) to a school setting.…”

“…It was stated the importance of utilizing the affordances that develop with the presence of researchers in educational settings from the insights of cultural-historical activity theory and the concept of expanded knowledge. It was suggested in the conclusion that participants should use the chances for teaching and learning that exist when scholars are present to increase the "impact" of research, at least locally (Maheux & Roth, 2013).…”
