Creating Natural‐Looking Removable Prostheses: Combining Art and Science to Imitate Nature

Abstract: Implant-retained overdentures can significantly improve the patients' function. The esthetic performance of these restorations however, may not be satisfying the patients' expectations and demands. Customizing the artificial gingival areas and individual staining of the prefabricated acrylic teeth may improve the esthetic performance creating natural-looking removable prostheses.

“…29 The esthetic, color stability, and visual threshold in restorative dentistry have been evaluated in numbers of studies. [32][33][34][35][36] In this study, color changes of denture teeth were ranged from 0.3 to 2.2 in TP group and 0.3 to 1.9 in SR group. Color changes of acrylic resin denture bases were ranged from 1.3-2.7 in LU group, 0.4-2.9 in PA group, and 0.3-3.1 in VA group.…”

“…Owing to better awareness, the number of patients demanding esthetics has risen dramatically [ 8 ]. There is strong evidence that the success of complete dentures is closely related to the acceptance of their esthetics [ 9 , 10 ]. The esthetics of denture-base acrylic resins are significantly influenced by the translucency of removable prostheses [ 11 ].…”

“…Hence the planned prosthesis should fulfill esthetic harmony, functional efficiency and structural balance with the rest of the dentofacial structures. (8) The dentist should be aware of the evolution of dental materials and conventional laboratory techniques that enables him to offer removable restorations with natural appearance. (9) Dentist must select denture teeth with superior physical and mechanical properties, due to their significant role in the overall esthetical outcome (9) In addition, dental prostheses should be fabricated with a goal of reducing the amount of force to the residual ridges.…”
