Creating Place in the Virtual Design Studio

Abstract: Abstract:The current wave of attempts to create virtual design studios has demonstrated a wide range of didactical as well as computational models. Through work performed over the past year, an evolution of many of these concepts has been created which fosters a sense of place. This aspect of place has to do with identity and community rather than with form and space. Initial virtual design studio projects were often merely a digital pin-up board, which enabled distributed and asynchronous criticism and review… Show more

“…In the past, despite showing strong potential, VDS was limited by technical issues such as the internet bandwidth, cost and accessibility, limitations of CAD programs, and limitations of digital media for housing and recording design studio sessions (Wojtowicz 1995; Kvan 2001; Reffat 2007; Schnabel & Kvan 2001; Russell 2001) but today, many of those concerns have been ameliorated by the accelerated development of digital technology. Thus, it is time to define new empirical frameworks for VDS, ones which are no longer bound by technical limitations, but by a traditional system that resists change.…”

“…However, despite their great potential, distance education and digital design have been constrained in the past by technical issues such as CAD programs limitations, internet bandwidth, cost and accessibility, and also limitations of digital media for housing and recording design studio sessions (Wojtowicz, 1995;Kvan, 2001;Reffat, 2007;Schnabel & Kvan, 2001;Russell, 2001), but today, many of these concerns have been alleviated by the rapid development of digital technology it's time to establish new empirical frameworks for distant education and as a result digital design, ones that aren't constrained by technical constraints but rather by a resistant-to-change existing system (Iranmanesh & Onur, 2021).…”

“…With the 1990s a special interest started to be paid to virtual teaching, which today culminates with highly spread MOOCs. Brückner [12] proposed a multimedia learning system, and Russel [13] introduced the virtual studio, a collaborative platform to share project critique. Hughes [14] did a review of the multimedia development at that date, emphasizing also the development of some game and simulation applications.…”
