Creating Watercolor Style Images Taking Into Account Painting Techniques

Abstract: Research for creating impressive images like paintings has attained more and more importance because of the recent growth in processing images. Among many painting styles, watercolor style gives a strong impression because of its thin colors and its soft appearance. This paper proposes a method to create watercolor style images from input images, for instance photographs. In contrast with the previously proposed watercolor methods that focuses only on simulating the effects of watercolor medium such as the mot… Show more

“…To replicate (usually a subset of) those effects, a large variety of approaches have been proposed, going from simple image filters [Bousseau et al 2006;Johan et al 2004] to physical simulations [Curtis et al 1997;Small 1991]. In this paper we focus on the interactive stylization of 3D animations, for which an artist cannot draw each image manually neither with traditional techniques nor using physical [Chu and Tai 2005;Van Laerhoven and Van Reeth 2005;You et al 2013] or procedural Lu et al 2013] simulations.…”

“…A significant body of research has been devoted to creating watercolor rendering for static images [Small 1991;Curtis et al 1997;Lum and Ma 2001;Lei and Chang 2004;Van Laerhoven et al 2004;Johan et al 2005;Luft and Deussen 2006;Bousseau et al 2006]. Commercial tools, like Photoshop TM and The GIMP, also provide ways of creating watercolor-like renderings from images.…”

“…Mao et al [4] have proposed a method to generate a pencil drawing-style by using a vector field in the image and white noise, and Johan [5] has proposed a method to create watercolor-style images taking into account paint-ing techniques.…”
