Creative cognition in composing music

Abstract: In this paper we presented an overview of theoretical and empirical research in a domain of cognitive psychology of music, psychology of creativity and interdisciplinary studies concerning the creative cognitive processes in composing music, with an intention to bring them into connection and to raise questions about further research. We brought into focus the cognitive processes in composing music since the key role of cognitive mechanisms and processes, next to the emotional experience and imagery, was shown… Show more

“…There are three main methods of detecting emotions: subjective experience, behavioral manifestations, and physiological changes. Quickly and accurately detecting changes in a patient's mood is a key step in healthcare [ 15 20 ]. In daily life, many patients may conceal their true emotions during the consultation for various reasons, so it is difficult to accurately analyze the patient's current emotions through subjective experience questionnaires or facial expressions and verbal movements in behavioral performance.…”

“…10-11;Juslin, 2003, p. 290). Some authors speak about 'structural expression' as part of the communication process during the performance (see Bogunović & Popović Mlađenović, 2014). This corresponds with the results of the newest research study, where musical properties are seen as the base on which the aesthetic experience of contemporary classical music processing starts and reflects its further cognitive and emotional processing (Mencke et al, 2023, p. 290).…”

“…Certainly, the metacognitive strategies in generative and exploratory phases of the creative process (Finke et al, 1992), related to elaboration and hierarchical organisation and structuring of ideas, solving problems, and finding solutions ( Bogunović & Popović Mlađenović, 2014), as well as the 'quality of the creative outcomes will be influenced by the extent of the person's knowledge and how the elements of that knowledge are accessed and combined' ( Bogunović, 2019, p. 100).…”

“…Musical composition as an activity is often described as an iterative process (Bogunović 2019, 94) where a stimulus occurs, work is developed, revised and the cycle iterates, rather than as a flow along a linear chain of events from concept to realization. This model is useful as it distances creativity from a simplistic test/experiment workflow: initial propositions are under constant revisions in order to generate new materials and rarely is there only one available path of response to a creative proposition.…”
