Abstract: As instruments of credit have proliferated over the past two centuries, connecting individuals, governments, and firms, credit relationships have become increasingly central to explanations of economic life. Social theorists have recently focused on the role of credit and debt in moral frameworks, legal formalization, social stratification, economic crisis, and the power of finance.
