Creep and Fracture Behavior of Peak-Aged Mg-11Y-5Gd-2Zn-0.5Zr (wt pct)

Abstract: The tensile-creep and creep-rupture behavior of heat-resistant peak-aged Mg-11Y-5Gd-2Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) (WGZ1152) was investigated at T=523-598K (0.58-0.66T m ) and stresses between 30MPa to 140MPa. The minimum creep rate of the alloy was almost two orders of magnitude lower than that for WE54-T6, and was comparable to that for HZ32-T5. The creep behavior exhibited an extended tertiary creep stage, which was believed to be associated with precipitate coarsening. The creep stress exponent value was 4.5, suggesting… Show more

“…In recent decades, newly developed Mg-Gd-Y alloys have received extensive interests due to their ultrahigh strength both at room and elevated temperatures [1][2][3], better creep resistance than WE54 alloy [4] and even being better than some conventional Al alloys [5]. However, most of these researches mainly focus on extrusion [2,6] and rolling processes [7,8].…”

“…According to corresponding fast Fourier transformation (FFT) patterns of the red dotted box in Figure 7a (Figure 7b), the fine β′ phase (Mg 7 Gd) with a body‐centered orthorhombic structure ( a = 0.640 nm, b = 2.223 nm, and c = 0.521 nm) was detected. [ 10,34,35 ] The β′ phases formed on the prismatic planes of the matrix with a dense triangular arrangement provide not only most effective barriers to the motion of basal dislocation motion but are also very effective against creep deformation. [ 36,37 ] However, β′ phases are not stable at elevated temperatures.…”

“…Zinc helps to improve ductility and strength particularly at high temperature [6]. ZE41 Mg alloy is an attractive material because of its superior mechanical properties [7]. However, considerable investigations have been carried out on the effect of R.E, Zr and Zn on the mechanical properties of Mg alloy.…”
