Creepy Technology:What Is It and How Do You Measure It?

Abstract: Interactive technologies are getting closer to our bodies and permeate the infrastructure of our homes. While such technologies offer many benefits, they can also cause an initial feeling of unease in users. It is important for Human-Computer Interaction to manage first impressions and avoid designing technologies that appear creepy. To that end, we developed the Perceived Creepiness of Technology Scale (PCTS), which measures how creepy a technology appears to a user in an initial encounter with a new artefact… Show more

“…Langer and K€ onig (2018) stated that two facets form this construct: emotional creepiness (affective dimension) and uneasy ambiguity (cognitive dimension). In the context of humanmachine interactions (Lutz et al, 2019;Olivera-La Rosa et al, 2019;Shklovski et al, 2015), it is akin to a feeling of unease that is difficult to express, and an unpleasant emotional response correlated to the ambiguity induced by the perception that the machine's behavior goes against traditional social norms (Tene and Polonetsky, 2013;Wo zniak et al, 2021). Users then become confused about how to act when interacting with an unusual technology that is ambiguous to them (Li et al, 2021;Shklovski et al, 2014;Tene and Polonetsky, 2013).…”

“…Closely associated with the potential exploitation of personal data when using a given technological solution, the use of the term "creepy" is frequently associated with words such as "invasive," "uncomfortable," "suspicious," etc., to refer to a technology that is deemed to be a source of discomfort and privacy threat to the individual (Seberger et al, 2021). Research along these lines has used the term "creepy" to describe technologies that are perceived to have the potential to compromise and threaten users' privacy (Pierce, 2019) through the collection of personal data (Wo zniak et al, 2021). Indeed, proactive help from humanoid-like robots, advertising and unsolicited social networking encounters are labeled creepy because they use algorithms that exploit personal data to provide tailored recommendations (Li et al, 2021;Lutz et al, 2019;Wo zniak et al, 2021).…”
