CREST Syndrome in Systemic Sclerosis Patients – Is Dystrophic Calcinosis a Key Element to a Positive Diagnosis?

Abstract: Introduction CREST syndrome is a clinical entity associated with systemic sclerosis, which meets at least three of the five clinical features: calcinosis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Three of these clinical features (Raynaud’s phenomenon, sclerodactyly and esophageal dysmotility) are often present in classical subsets of SSc: limited and diffuse, and their presence in association does not define CREST syndrome. Calcinosis seems to be less common… Show more

“…Prasad and Abcarian documented the neoplastic change in anal condyloma to 1.82%, with four cases exhibiting both histological and invasive characteristics, while only two cases displayed significant infiltration into nearby soft tissues without histological indications of malignancy [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. When squamous cell carcinoma occurs in the context of giant condyloma acuminata, management must be chosen by a multidisciplinary team, and there are some cases when only palliative measures can be offered [ 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…When severe COVID-19 is associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or even systemic sclerosis, patients tend to exhibit higher severity rates and increased mortality. [44][45][46][47] Consequently, such patients must be treated by a multidisciplinary medical team according to a personalized plan, and the oxygen therapy must include consecutive ventilation strategies adapted to the patient's specific needs. Further studies are needed to achieve personalized guidelines for these patients.…”

“…The hand looks like a claw and sclerodactyly appears ( Figure 2 ). Facial skin fibrosis induces the sclerodermal facies characteristic of the disease ( 5 , 6 ). Raynaud’s phenomenon is present almost constantly in SSc and it is the expression of reversible peripheral vasospasm ( 7 ).…”
