Crimean–Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in Bulgaria and Turkey

Abstract: Infections of humans with the tick-borne Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) can cause a severe hemorrhagic fever with case fatality rates of up to 80%. Most humans are infected by tick bite, crushing infected ticks by hand or by unprotected contact with blood of viremic mammals. Next to the notified human CCHF cases, the real distribution and the situation in animals in Southeastern Europe are nearly unknown. Since domestic ruminants play a crucial role in the life cycle of the vector ticks and the … Show more

“…A recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa resulted in over 28,000 cases of the disease and more than 11,000 deaths32. Smaller sporadic outbreaks of Far-eastern subtype tick-borne flavivirus, RVFV, and CCHFV occur on a yearly basis and have previously been reported in Siberia/Russia, Africa/Arabian Peninsula, and Southeastern Europe, respectively333435. The mortality rate can reach up to 20 and 50% for respectively RSSEV and CCHFV3637, while RVFV rather causes a permanent debilitating disease in about 10% of cases38.…”

“…As infected animals are usually asymptomatic, only active surveillance or human case detection will reveal CCHFV in circulation. Seroconversion in animals is a good indicator of CCHFV prevalence; when domestic animals in Turkey and Bulgaria were tested for CCHFV-specific IgG antibodies, the mean seroprevalence was 26% for Bulgaria and 57% for Turkey, with some provinces reporting seroprevalence of almost 90% 94. In both rural and urban settings, similar ‘random sampling’ surveillance programmes have been employed for ticks85 95–97 and other ruminants 98 99.…”

“…Tick-borne viruses have never been documented in Lebanon. Some of these viruses such as CCHFV occur in some neighboring countries: Turkey and Iran [65, 66]. Presently, Lebanon is considered at risk for the occurrence of several arboviral diseases such as WNV.…”
