Criterion validity and sensitivity to change of the Early Rehabilitation Index (ERI): results from a German multi-center study

Abstract: BackgroundEvaluation of functional status is difficult in neurological and neurosurgical early rehabilitation patients. The Early Rehabilitation Index (ERI) was introduced in Germany over 20 years ago, but since then validation studies are lacking. The ERI (range −325 to 0 points) includes highly relevant items including the necessity of intermittent mechanical ventilation or tracheostomy.MethodsThe present paper analyzed data from a German multi-center study, enrolling 754 neurological early rehabilitation pa… Show more

“…For stroke, several studies confirm that younger age is associated with a better outcome (see review [ 34 ]). Age effects are reported in the NNER literature for both, the BI [ 33 ] and the ERI [ 35 ]. Additionally, patients made more functional progress when the NNER treatment was initiated early after the injury.…”

“…3 It is established that early in-patient rehabilitation for stroke patients is associated with improvement, better outcomes, and a higher percentage who return home. [4][5][6][7][8] However, some patients are more likely to benefit than others; to maximize the use of scarce and expensive resources, some stratification and selection of patients are necessary.…”

“… 10 To calculated the ERBI score, it is necessary to add the ERI (-325 to 0 points) to the BI (0 to 100 points), which results in an ERBI total score of -325 to 100 points. 7 The scale showed high interrater reliability and validity compared with other neurological assessment scales. 6 , 7 …”

“…There are seven items, which if applicable have a negative value of -50 or -25 points. 7 ) The BI is a widely known scale that was created to evaluate the response to rehabilitation of individuals with chronic neurological disease. Its objective is to measure the ability to perform 10 activities of daily living (ADLs) independently, with some help or completely depending on help.…”
