The prospect of universal EM1 requirements throughout the EC is a double edged sword. The promise of unified emissions requirements and market access procedures has been welcomed. However, the EC has indicated that the planned Directive on the electromagnetic compatibility would be universal, embracing susceptibility as well as interference. Initial drafts of the Directive have made it seem likely that the good intentions of unification of European laws would be lost in a morass of divergent, nationally based susceptibility standards. Fortunately, progress is being made towards the establishment of a rational and unified immunity standard for information technology equipment at the CENELEC level. This paper discusses the shape that immunity requirements for information technology equipment may take.
