Critical appraisal of questionnaires to assess functional impairment in individuals with mild cognitive impairment

Abstract: Psychometric studies with strong methodological rigor are required in the future. Considering the fact that IADL decline has been associated with dementia, early detection of functional difficulties in MCI needs to be encouraged as it will allow suitable and timely interventions to prolong functional independence of affected individuals.

“…We performed correlation analyses between complexity of BOLD signals in these brain regions with significant MSE differences and cognitive function scores (MMSE, FAQ, and CDR). These three clinical measurements provide quantitative assessments of cognitive function and are widely used ( Ciesielska et al, 2016 ; Kaur et al, 2016 ; Kim et al, 2017 ). Higher scores of MMSE indicate higher aptitude of cognition; low functional performance is related to higher FAQ scores and the presence of dementia is indicated by higher CDR scores.…”

“…For example, widely used tests such as the Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE) [8] and the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale–cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog) [9] have been shown to be inappropriate for use in the design and evaluation of clinical trials targeted at MCI and mild AD [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] . As to the measurement of everyday functioning, recent reviews pointed out that most commonly used questionnaires are only of limited use to detect the early functional decline [14] , [15] .…”

“…Este fue determinado según el cuestionario de Pfeiffer (positivo para deterioro cognitivo con resultados de 4 puntos o más) que evalúa 10 preguntas sobre memoria y otras funciones mentales superiores [19,20] . Esta prueba tiene una sensibilidad del 83% y especificidad del 84% para evaluación de trastornos neurocognitivos [21] .…”
