Critical Appraisal Toolkit (CAT) for assessing multiple types of evidence

Abstract: Healthcare professionals are often expected to critically appraise research evidence in order to make recommendations for practice and policy development. Here we describe the Critical Appraisal Toolkit (CAT) currently used by the Public Health Agency of Canada. The CAT consists of: algorithms to identify the type of study design, three separate tools (for appraisal of analytic studies, descriptive studies and literature reviews), additional tools to support the appraisal process, and guidance for summarizing … Show more

“…Specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) may be impossible to achieve with this. 12 These findings were analyzed using CATmaker software, specifically the diagnosis of STH infection with the FLOTAC technique on all positive and negative samples, regardless of species, with a sensitivity of 100 % (100-100, 95 % CI) and an NPV of 100 % (100-100, CI95 % ). All species of STH worms were examined.…”

“…The CAT maker software as the toolkit adds to the arsenal of critical appraisal tools currently available and is especially useful in assessing evidence from a wide variety of research design. 12 The statistic was used to compare the agreement between the two techniques for diagnosing STH infection (FECT versus FLOTAC). The sensitivity (the proportion of true positives in the population) and negative predictive value (the proportion of individuals with a negative test result who are correctly diagnosed) of each method have been calculated, with the combined results from each technique serving as the diagnostic "gold" standard.…”

“…A further 92 papers did not meet the search criteria outlined in the scope. A critical appraisal of the remaining 82 studies was accomplished using the PHAC Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines Critical Appraisal Tool Kit (1), and a further 31 papers were eliminated due to flaws in methodology (n=16) or analysis of results (n=15). This resulted in a total of 51 papers on the risk of infections related to personal services.…”
