Critical empirical research in IS: an example of gender and the IT workforce

Abstract: As critical research gains increasing legitimacy among IS research approaches, a recurring issue is the lack of empirical examples. In response, this paper provides an illustration of critical empirical research by drawing on a multi-year field study of women in the American IT labor force. The analysis is informed by two theoretical positions: 1) Lukes' framework on power which highlights both overt and covert power issues in the workforce; and 2) Trauth's individual differences theory of gender and IT which … Show more

“…For almost a decade, researchers have sought to identify barriers to the retention of female IS employees (e.g., Ahuja, 2002;Trauth and Howcroft, 2006). Riemenschneider et al (2006) studied female IS employees and identified key workplace barriers that often lead to voluntary turnover decisions (e.g., managing family responsibilities, stress, work schedule flexibility, job qualities, promotion barriers, discrimination and a lack of consistency on the part of management).…”

“…The use of critical epistemology for gender research (Trauth and Howcroft, 2006a) and for gender and race research (Kvasny, 2006) is already documented in the IT literature. The recent growth of critical research is consistent with the growing recognition of the organizational and societal contexts in the study of IT development, deployment and use.…”
