Critical look at cosmological perturbation theory techniques

Abstract: Recently a number of analytic prescriptions for computing the non-linear matter power spectrum have appeared in the literature. These typically involve resummation or closure prescriptions which do not have a rigorous error control, thus they must be compared with numerical simulations to assess their range of validity. We present a direct side-by-side comparison of several of these analytic approaches, using a suite of high-resolution N-body simulations as a reference, and discuss some general trends. All of … Show more

“…The solid theoretical setting, the remarkable agreement with observations, the improvement with respect to other currently available techniques (see for example [5]), and the self-consistency of the different methods of extracting the parameters of the EFT, give very strong evidence that the EFT is the correct language to make theoretical predictions for Large Scale Structures (LSS). This becomes even more evident when one tries to make predictions for other toy, 'scaling', universes where the initial power spectrum follows a simple power law.…”

“…This allows us to set ω i = 0 for the rest of our calculations. 5 One potentially confusing point of using the bare velocity instead of the renormalized velocity is that while non-linear corrections for v l,R are small, this does not need to be the case for v l . For example, in a universe where the power spectrum is of the form P 11 ∼ k n /k n+3 NL , one obtains schematically:…”
