Critical Success Factors for Implementation of Lean and Green in Medium Scale Manufacturing Industries

Abstract: Lean manufacturing is a strategic tool, which is used to cut down waste and to improve the efficiency of an organization and helps the organization to sustain in the competitive environment. Implementation of green systems in organization results in reduce energy consumption, waste generation, and hazardous materials used while also building the companies’ images as socially responsible organizations. Several research efforts discussed in the literature indicate that lean companies show significant environment… Show more

“…Scholarship in the past have linked lean practices to green supply chain management and environmentally sustainable practices (King and Lenox, 2001; Simpson and Power, 2005; Mollenkopf et al , 2010; Yang et al , 2011; Dues et al , 2013; Gunasekharan et al , 2014; Ciccullo et al , 2018; Gaikwad and Sunnapwar, 2020).…”

“…The current study adds lean and agility as antecedents of social sustainability orientation, and thus, the present research tries to augment the literature on social sustainability in the supply chain. Past studies have frequently linked lean practices with environmental sustainability (Gunasekharan et al , 2014). However, there is a lack of literature on the connection of lean practices with social sustainability (Jurado and Fuentes, 2014) as only some studies such as the ones by Longini et al (2013) and Distelhorst et al (2017) have provided case study–based evidence for the relationship between lean practices and social sustainability.…”

“…When discussing close relationship with suppliers, Simpson and Power (2005) identify that the supplier-customer relationship is positively related to the implementation of environmental management practices of the supplying firm, thus delineating a precursor integration. With the same integration perspective, Gunasekharan et al (2014) underline in a hierarchical conceptual model how supplier involvement is a precondition for disassembly intended as a waste reduction technique, given that suppliers should design parts to be easily dis-assembled or dismantled. Recently, Campos and Vazques Brust (2016) among lean and green supplier oriented practices, suggest that special types of awards for suppliers should be designed.…”

“…Bhattacharya et al (2011) ascertained that the government can also accelerate the implementation of many green technologies by using different modes, creating a dedicated “Green Fund” to invest in emergent technologies, setting up “Green science parks” that encourage collaboration between businesses, research institutions and universities and providing fiscal incentives for the early adopters. Gunasekharan et al (2014) claimed that government support is very significant for the execution of lean and green, as it is having more driving power than any other factor. Government support will assist to attain other facilitating factors and thus helps in GLPs adoption.…”

“…It is because of the fact that finance covers the path through which other valuable provisions like training and consultancy can be completed (Achanga et al , 2006). So, the financial abilities of the manufacturing industries are one of the facilitating aspects for the successful using GLPs (Gunasekharan et al , 2014).…”
