Critical superposition instant of surge waves in surge tank with long headrace tunnel

Abstract: Superposed mass oscillation that often occurs in a throttled surge tank with a long headrace tunnel is studied. The instant of the worst superposition of mass oscillation in a surge tank is analysed. The analytical formula predicting the worst superposition instant is derived exactly and verified (1) with a numerical solution to the fundamental equations for the surge tank and (2) with a numerical simulation of hydraulic transients in an actual hydropower station. It is shown that the superposed oscillation pr… Show more

“…Minimization of this maximum value is taken as the first objective function in this study. Many researchers have derived empirical or stochastic equations for simplicity in the calculation of the maximum surge head in the surge tank [43][44][45][46], but MOC gives the most accurate results for surge analysis from which the maximum value can be easily obtained.…”

“…Due to the great overburden plus the structural stress, the behavior of the rock masses under the high and complex in situ stress field is a key parameter influencing TBM construction [13]. For the throttled surge tank with a long headrace tunnel, superimposed mass oscillation often occurs and affects the safe and stable operation of the hydropower station [14]. In view of the topography and geological setting, the hydropower station with a super long headrace tunnel faces a series of huge technical issues related to the engineering geology and rock mechanics [15], including the safety of the underground caverns, predicting and managing the groundwater, and operation of the TBM under high geo-stresses and high groundwater pressures.…”

“…In order to reduce the amplitude of water level oscillations in surge tanks and accelerate the attenuation, a new type of differential surge tank [ 15 , 16 ] is designed. However, some undesirable transients may appear because of the complex arrangements and new hydraulic devices [ 17 ].…”
