Critical Thinking and Interaction Changes over Time: A Study of an Asynchronous Forum

Abstract: Abstract. This study investigates the changes in levels of critical thinking and interaction between 50 participants on an online forum. This change was measured by 4 samples of 100 posts taken over 13 weeks. This study shows that levels of critical thinking will steadily increase, and that the amount of different interactions the participants make will steadily decrease over the course of a semester. This study is important because it shows levels of change in critical thinking and interaction in a largely un… Show more

“…Previous research has suggested that, over time, group interactions online become stronger, which may lead to higher quality learning outcomes as the interactions become deeper and more effective (Costley & Han, 2013). Once groups are formed to work together, the learning outcomes from the group work may take time to become established both in terms of group knowledge building processes and retention of information (DeChurch & Mesmer-Magnus, 2010;Gruenfeld & Hollingshead, 1993).…”

“…In the contrary, some other studies noted that simulation scenario training limit students' achievement through acquiring minimum knowledge level of technical and non-technical compared with actual practice setting training [15,47]. According to other literature, application of simulation scenario did not affect students' score significantly especially critical thinking [13,48,49] because its changes needs prolonged times [50,51].…”
