Bu meta-analiz çalışmasının amacı 01.01.2015-30.11.2020 tarihleri arasında yapılmış çalışmaların sonuçlarını birleştirerek, eleştirel düşünme ile problem çözme arasındaki ilişkiyi (yön ve büyüklük) araştırmaktır. Arama terimlerini kullanarak bazı elektronik veritabanları aracılığıyla ilgili literatürün araştırılmasının ardından elde edilen çalışmalar dahil edilme ölçütleri açısından iki farklı araştırmacı tarafından incelenmiş ve analize 43 çalışma dahil edilmiştir. Bu çalışmaların bazılarında birden fazla veri paylaşıldığı için, meta-analiz 49 veri ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Eleştirel düşünme ve problem çözme arasındaki ilişkinin etki büyüklüğü 0.483 olarak bulunmuştur ve bu değer eleştirel düşünme ile problem çözme arasında orta düzeyde bir ilişkinin olduğunu göstermektedir. Elde edilen bu etki büyüklüğü çalışmanın yapıldığı bölge, eleştirel düşünme türü, sınıf düzeyi, alan ve yayın türü alt gruplarına göre farklılaşmamaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında elde edilen sonuçlar, eleştirel düşünme ve problem çözmeye ilişkin teorik alt yapıyla ve geçmiş çalışmaların sonuçlarıyla örtüşmektedir.

“…Consequently, CT dispositions and NML should be implemented during the effort of fighting against FN on SM. CT dispositions (Kennedy et al, 1991 ; Lewis & Smith, 1993 ) and NML (Buckingham, 2003 ; Hobbs & Jensen, 2009 ) are teachable skills through appropriate education, and hence, enhancing individuals’ CT dispositions and NML should be included among the most important aims of educational systems because they do not only positively contribute to individuals’ daily and school life (Halpern, 2003 ; Orhan, 2022a , 2022b ; Paul & Elder, 2001 ) but also work as important barriers against the consumption and dissemination of FN on SM. Therefore, we can say that enhancing individuals’ CT dispositions and NML would be a good idea to equip them with the necessary skills that are useful in the fight against FN on SM.…”

Fake news detection on social media: the predictive role of university students’ critical thinking dispositions and new media literacy

This study aimed to investigate the predictive role of critical thinking dispositions and new media literacies on the ability to detect fake news on social media. The sample group of the study consisted of 157 university students. Sosu Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale, New Media Literacy Scale, and fake news detection task were employed to gather the data. It was found that university students possess high critical thinking dispositions and new media literacies as well as high fake news detection abilities and there is a positive and moderate relationship among these variables. Also, this study revealed that critical thinking dispositions and new media literacies significantly predicted university students’ abilities to detect fake news on social media and they together explained 18% of the total variance on fake news detection. Besides, university students’ critical thinking dispositions presented a larger effect on their abilities to detect fake news than new media literacies.

Complex thinking is an important tool for effective decision-making, as it helps people to better understand uncertain situations by considering the multiple variables and relationships involved in a situation, thus being able to identify patterns and connections that would not otherwise be evident. This article presents the results of a bibliometric study to identify academic publications that consider the correlation between decision-making in the business area and complex thinking competency and its sub-competencies. The intention was to have a theoretical horizon that provides a complete overview of the current academic situation regarding the correlation of both professional skills to identify areas of opportunity for new studies. Methodologically, we conducted a literature review using Scopus and Web of Science databases under the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol from which a sample of 339 articles related to both topics was obtained. R, Rstudio, and Bibliometrix were used for the quantitative analysis of the data. The results showed an academic tendency to associate decision-making in business with critical thinking, paying little attention to the other sub-competencies of complex thinking. Furthermore, we found a concentration of research in specific universities and countries, repeating a tendency to study only a few sub-competencies. Overall, this work sheds light on the broad opportunity to link the complex thinking macro-competency with decision-making in business, to provide more extraordinary skills and tools to future professionals.
