Critical thinking skills of natural science undergraduate students on biology subject: Gender perspective

Abstract: One of the most important skills needed to face the 21st-century challenges is critical thinking. Gender differences are considered to contribute to the critical thinking skills. The objective of this study was to determine students' critical thinking skills based on gender. This quantitative research involved 57 students of the Natural Sciences Education Study Program, Universitas Hasyim Asy’ari. The instrument employed was critical thinking skills test. The data was analyzed using independent samples t-test.… Show more

“…Meanwhile, critical thinking reinforces the students for being strong problem solvers (Amin et al, 2020;Saputro et al, 2020), impeccable decision makers and people who never stop learning (Florea & Hurjui, 2015;Moon, 2007;Ricketts, 2003). The critical thinking is also very important to be owned by each person (Hasan et al, 2019;Hayati & Berlianti, 2020;Maryuningsih et al, 2020;Permana et al, 2019). It encourages someone to solve the problems based on persuasive, logical, and rational arguments which involve of verification, evaluation, and choosing the right answers or even refusing through appropriate reasons and giving alternative solutions (Facione, 2011;Fitzgerald & Smith, 2016;Johnson, 2012;Storey, 2013).…”

“…Some researchers attributed females' success in CT to females' being more able to think critically and to arrange the way of their thinking than those of males. For example, depending on the explanations of many researchers, Hayati and Berlianti (2020) said that females are more careful and meticulous about re-examining what they have done and have better debating skills when compared to males. They also mentioned that female students ask questions more accurately and credibly than males, implying that female students have superior CT abilities than male students.…”

“…The basis of studying natural science disciplines is the actualization of specific operational development, which requires the formation of a critical thinking paradigm (Leasa et al, 2020). Variability in learning is both a guarantee and a result of critical thinking (Hayati & Berlianti, 2020). For a long time in natural science, critical thinking has been associated with the process of epistemological activity.…”
