Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity and disability worldwide. COPD cannot always be defined as an occupational disease, because it is more of a work-related disease or a disease that worsens at work, and the patient’s ability to work will depend on the degree and duration of lung function damage. Very clearly and unambiguously, apart from smoking as a risk factor for the development of COPD, the workplace and work environment are also important. In our research, the largest number of patients with COPD worked at workplaces with special working conditions and were exposed to chemical, physical, and biological hazards at the workplace, which brings with it an increased number of sick days due to frequent exacerbations of the disease and reduced work ability.

On the contrary, smoking ban at workplace was found to decrease both average number of daily cigarette consumption and proportion of heavy smokers in Croatian healthcare stuff [ 47 ]. Nicotine dependence in Croatian male inpatients with schizophrenia

BackgroundPatients with schizophrenia have the highest known rates of cigarette smoking, but less is known about their smoking behavior and the differences across geographical regions, including Croatia.The aim of this study was to compare patterns of nicotine dependence between patients with schizophrenia and healthy individuals, and to determine the relationship between clinical presentation and the severity of smoking.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 182 recently hospitalized male inpatients and 280 healthy males, who were daily smokers. All participants have fulfilled the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Patients were also evaluated by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).ResultsPatients had higher FTND total score (p = 0.010), smoked their first cigarette earlier in the morning (p = 0.000), consumed higher number of cigarettes (p = 0.000), while healthy subjects had more difficulties to refrain from smoking in places where it is forbidden (p = 0.000) and smoked more even when they were sick (p = 0.000). While severe dependence was more prevalent in the patient group, light dependence was more frequent in control subjects (p = 0.04). Smoking behavior was not associated with either PANSS total score or any of its subscales and items.ConclusionsSmokers with schizophrenia differ from healthy smokers in both smoking behavior and level of dependence. Longitudinal studies are needed to shed more light on the complex relationship between smoking and psychopathology in schizophrenia.

IZVLEČEKUvod: Razširjenost kajenja med zdravstvenimi delavci postaja resen problem. Glavni namen raziskave je bil spoznati dejavnike, ki so povezani z uporabo tobaka zdravstvenih delavcev. Metode: V raziskavi je bil uporabljen integrativni pregled znanstvene literature s področja razširjenosti kajenja med zdravstvenimi delavci in dejavnikov, povezanih z uporabo tobaka pri zdravstvenih delavcih. Uporabljene so bile mednarodne podatkovne baze CINAHL, PubMed, SpringerLink, prav tako pa smo literaturo iskali tudi s pomočjo spletnega brskalnika Google (Google učenjak). S pomočjo ključnih besed razširjenost kajenja med zdravstvenimi delavci, prevalence of smoking, nurses, professionals, tobacco use, smokers, healthcare professionals se je v končno analizo uvrstilo 13 zadetkov, ki so ustrezali vključitvenim kriterijem. Za prikaz pregleda podatkovnih baz in odločanja o uporabnosti pregledanih virov je bila uporabljena metodologija PRISMA. Zbrani podatki so bili analizirani z metodo metasinteze. Rezultati: Identificirali smo 23 kod, ki smo jih glede na lastnosti in medsebojne povezave združili v štiri vsebinske kategorije: (1) nadzor nad tobakom, (2) socialni dejavniki, povezani z uporabo tobaka, (3) ekonomski dejavniki, povezani z uporabo tobaka, (4) zavedanje zdravstvenih delavcev o pomenu promocije nekajenja. Kot najpogostejše statistične metode pri kvantitativnih analizah so bile uporabljene bivariatna (test hi-kvadrat, t-test) in multivariatna analiza. Diskusija in zaključek: Uporaba tobaka pri zdravstvenih delavcih je povezana s socialno-ekonomskimi dejavniki, starostjo, spolom, nižjo izobrazbo, nižjim dohodkom in delovnim okoljem. Krepiti je treba programe promocije nekadilskega vedenja in opogumljati zdravstvene delavce v vlogi vzornikov. ABSTRACT Introduction:Smoking prevalence among health professionals is becoming a serious issue. The study aimed at identifying the factors associated with tobacco use in health professionals. Methods: A systematic literature review related to smoking prevalence among health professionals and factors associated with tobacco use in health professionals was conducted. The databases searched were CINAHL, PubMed, and SpringerLink. In addition, Google Scholar was used. The keywords smoking prevalence among health professionals, prevalence of smoking, nurses, professionals, tobacco use, smokers, health professionals yielded 13 results that met the inclusion criteria and were used in the final analysis. PRISMA methodology was used to review databases and select the relevant articles. Meta-synthesis was conducted to analyze the obtained data. Results: A total of 23 codes were identified and grouped into four substantive categories: (1) tobacco control, (2) social factors associated with tobacco use, (3) economic factors associated with tobacco use, and (4) awareness of the importance of promoting non-smoking behavior among health professionals.
