Cropping systems in the Vu Gia Thu Bon river basin, Central Vietnam: On farmers’ stubborn persistence in predominantly cultivating rice

Abstract: Despite high pressures for agricultural land conversion, increasing competition for water, and the low net benefits of rice production, rice is still by far the predominant farm occupation in the Vu Gia Thu Bon basin in Central Vietnam. This study examined the reasons for such persistence, by surveying and analyzing a comprehensive set of qualitative (planting and harvesting dates) and quantitative data (yields, labor and non-labor inputs, prices) for all the crops present in the cropping systems of 116 farms … Show more

“…Results of this study show that the characteristics of Vietnamese beef cattle farmers vary, reflecting diverse farming systems. Some of the previous research (Hoang, 2020;Pedroso, Tran, Nguyen, Le, Ribbe, Dang, & Le, 2017) indicate that the characteristics of Vietnamese farmers vary and the majority of the Vietnamese farmers operate in small-scale farming, which is corroborated by the results of this research. Treating wastes daily to protect environment 97.7…”

“…Inter-basin water transfer from the Vu Gia to Thu Bon sub-basins to generate electricity from Dak Mi 4 hydropower plant is causing significant changes in the respective flow regimes. Paddy rice is the dominant crop, as it accounts for approximately 70 % of irrigated agricultural area (Pedroso et al, 2016). Water stress during drought periods is a major constraint on agricultural production in the region.…”
