Cross-border malaria in Northern Brazil

Abstract: Background Cross-border malaria is a major barrier to elimination efforts. Along the Venezuela-Brazil-Guyana border, intense human mobility fueled primarily by a humanitarian crisis and illegal gold mining activities has increased the occurrence of cross-border cases in Brazil. Roraima, a Brazilian state situated between Venezuela and Guyana, bears the greatest burden. This study analyses the current cross-border malaria epidemiology in Northern Brazil between the years 2007 and 2018. … Show more

“…Artisanal gold mining is responsible for the survival of many families around the world and represents a stimulus for the increasing immigration in these areas [ 1 ]. People living in gold mining regions are exposed to numerous diseases such as malaria, which in Brazil has been and still is a major challenge for the disease elimination programme [ 2 ]. Because mining work is outdoors, miners are more susceptible to mosquito bites.…”

“…Although great achievements have been made in reducing the overall number of cases of malaria and eliminating indigenous cases in China, the elimination campaign faces challenges in areas near international borders 22 , 37 . The specific environmental, administrative, anthropological, and geographic characteristics of border areas have a unique impact on the epidemiology of malaria.…”

“…(1) case importation can be very significant locally, such as the case of cross-border malaria and a few high-risk municipalities [21,22] where population mobility is a key driver of malaria transmission, (2) reintroduction is a very real possibility given the high ecological receptivity for vectors of disease. An example of this was observed in 2017 when a few municipalities registered massive outbreaks [16] in areas where risk had already diminished considerably.…”
