Cross-border outbreak of listeriosis caused by cold-smoked salmon, revealed by integrated surveillance and whole genome sequencing (WGS), Denmark and France, 2015 to 2017

Abstract: In August 2017, an outbreak of six listeriosis cases in Denmark was traced to cold-smoked salmon, using epidemiological investigations and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analyses. Exchange of genome sequences allowed identification in France of a food isolate from a salmon-derived product and a human isolate from 2016 within the same cgMLST cluster as the Danish isolates (L2-SL8-ST8-CT771). The salmon product came from a third European Union country. WGS can rapidly link human cases and food isolates across Eur… Show more

“…Globally, the prevalence rates in fish show great variability [3,25,44,[46][47][48][49]: The prevalence of L. monocytogenes in fish are presumably from contaminated waters or during manipulation and processing with contaminated environment and/or equipment [47,50]. The L. monocytogenes isolated from our frozen fish samples indicates that L. monocytogenes has the ability to endure freezing of food, thereby acting as a reservoir to participate in future human listerial outbreaks [9,25,[51][52][53].…”

“…Like other RTE foods, the smoked salmon industry has had problems with Listeria spp. contamination (Rotariu, Thomas, Goodburn, Hutchison, & Strachan, 2014), and has been linked to outbreaks of listeriosis (Gillesberg Lassen et al, 2016;Schjørring et al, 2017).…”

“…Competent public health and food safety authorities in affected EU countries should share information at the European level on epidemiological, microbiological and environmental investigations (including tracing information) and issue relevant notifications using the Early Warning and Response System (EWRS) 1 and Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) 2 .…”

“…In 2017, a subset of five human cases was investigated in Denmark and found to be associated with consumption of salmon products produced in Poland [1]. Four L. monocytogenes ST8 isolates closely related to the human outbreak strain were found in three batches of sliced cold smoked salmon sampled at a Danish wholesaler and at a retail store belonging to the same wholesaler.…”
