Cross-correlation of the thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect and weak gravitational lensing: Planck and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam first-year data

Abstract: Cross-correlation analysis of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and weak gravitational lensing (WL) provides a powerful probe of cosmology and astrophysics of the intra-cluster medium. We present the measurement of the cross-correlation of tSZ and WL from Planck and Subaru Hyper-Suprime Cam. The combination enables us to study cluster astrophysics at high redshift. We use the tSZ-WL cross-correlation and the tSZ auto-power spectrum measurements to place a tight constraint on the hydrostatic mass bias… Show more

“…The Comptony parameter is proportional to the electron pressure integrated along the line of sight, thus probing the thermal energy content of thermalized hot plasmas residing in the gravitational potential wells of galaxy clusters. The combination of the thermal SZE and weak lensing thus provides unique astrophysical and cosmological probes (e.g., Doré et al 2001;Umetsu et al 2009;Osato et al 2020).…”

“…It may be possible to address issues of contamination from thermal dust using the methods of Addison et al (2012Addison et al ( , 2013. More recently, the cross correlation has been measured and investigated by Baxter et al (2019) and Omori et al (2019) in the context of a cross correlation of CMB and galaxy lensing with the Dark Energy Survey, and by Osato et al (2018Osato et al ( , 2020 with the Hyper Suprime-Cam survey.…”

“…Among potential studies, the cross-correlation of WL or GC with CMB lensing, which is (among other things) sensitive to the angular-diameter distance to the last-scattering surface, has been extensively explored (Holder et al 2013;Hand et al 2015;Kirk et al 2016;Baxter et al 2019). Another example can be found in cross-correlations with the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signal, a secondary effect imprinted on top of the primordial CMB anisotropies, which has been measured with increasing precision as well (Ma et al 2015;Hojjati et al 2017;Osato et al 2020;Yan et al 2021). Additionally, several future CMB experiments such as the Simons Observatory 11 (SO, Ade et al 2019) and the socalled CMB-Stage 4 project 12 (S4, Abazajian et al 2016), are planned for the next decade and will yield highly improved highresolution measurements of the CMB intensity and polarisation.…”
