In Canadian engineering institutions, a significant design experience must occur in the final year of study. In the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems at the University of Windsor, unsolved, open ended projects sponsored by industrial partners from a variety of sectors are provided to the student teams in order for them to apply appropriate design principles to generate original, feasible, working design solutions. Students may be engaged in systems design, facilities layout, optimization or other discipline related projects. To facilitate their progress, a series of interactive workshops have been designed to expose the students to team work and people skills, time management challenges, and so forth. They were designed to be fun and to support the student project activities regardless of the project type and industry sector The course structure, an overview of the workshops, and a detailed description of the 'problem definition' workshop is presented in this work.

The Oregon Institute of Technology [OIT] is the only public institute of technology in the Pacific Northwest. OIT offers degree programs in engineering, management, communications, health technology, and applied science. OIT's Computer Systems Engineering Technology [CSET] Department uses a sequence of three quarter-length senior project classes to meet ABET-TAC capstone design requirements. Due to a lack of student preparation for this senior project class sequence, an additional set of three quarter-length pre-requisite classes, junior project, was added. Both of these classes feature complex programmable digital logic circuit designs based on current VLSI technology. The junior project class is based on team projects and the success or failure of the students is influenced by both the quality of the faculty proctor's direction and the excellence of the social dynamics of the students' teamwork. This paper presents a paradigm for a conflict resolution scheme based on allowing the team members to fire a non-performing colleague in certain circumstances.

Ruth) Jill Urbanic received her B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Canada. After receiving her degree, she pursued opportunities to work in various advanced manufacturing environments. She has worked with several types of manufacturing, material handling, testing, gauging and assembly equipment for a variety of engine components and vehicle styles. She wished to expand her horizons by enhancing her practical background with more theoretical knowledge. To that end, she received her M.A. Sc. in Industrial Engineering and her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Windsor. Dr. Urbanic is presently an Assistant Professor at the University of Windsor. Her interests include integrating advanced technologies into manufacturing systems, in conjunction with balancing human characteristics and capabilities within the technical and business environments.
