Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Impact of Fixed Appliances Measure questionnaire in Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the condition-specific instrument Impact of Fixed Appliances Measure (IFAM), assessing its validity and reliability for use among Brazilian children/adolescents. The IFAM was translated, back-translated, cross-culturally adapted, and pilot-tested. The Brazilian version of the IFAM (B-IFAM) was tested on 161 10-to-18-year-old children/adolescents. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha (α) and test-retest reliability by intracla… Show more

“…There was no uniformity in the tests performed by the instruments to verify the construct validity, however, positive results were found in the instruments that presented this parameter. For criterion validity, different tests and desirable results were used in most studies that met this criterion [47,53,59,[60][61][62][63].…”

“…This questionnaire instrument focuses on ten basic daily activities, namely, eating, talking, cleaning the mouth, performing light physical activities, sleeping, relaxing, smiling, having emotional states, going out, and enjoying interacting with others. [14][15][16] In addition, the influence of daily life performance on oral caries aims to provide alternative sociodental indicators, focusing on measuring a person's ability to carry out the indicated daily activities with the condition of the oral caries. The results of the OIDP questions concerned with the general health conditions of children aged <5 years who often have toothache and dental caries indicated a significant correlation between the incidence rate of dental caries and the frequency of having toothache.…”

“…The impact of the orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances on the OHRQoL of adolescents was evaluated using the IFAM specific condition questionnaire. This questionnaire was developed in England (Mandall et al, 2006) and translated and transculturally adapted for use on the Brazilian population (B-IFAM) (Rebouças et al, 2018).…”

“…In 2006, a group of British researchers proposed a specific condition questionnaire, entitled the Impact of Fixed Appliances Measure ( IFAM ), for the evaluation of the impact of orthodontic treatment on the quality of life of adolescents (Mandall et al, 2006). This instrument was translated into Portuguese, and transculturally adapted and validated in Brazil, thus producing the version to be used on the Brazilian population (B-IFAM) (Rebouças et al, 2018). Therefore, the objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate, through the B-IFAM, the impact of the first six months of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances on the OHRQoL of adolescents, comparing boys and girls.…”
