Cross-cultural Validation of the Norwegian Version of the Banff Patellofemoral Instability Instrument 2.0

Abstract: Background: The Banff Patellofemoral Instability Instrument (BPII) 2.0 is a disease-specific quality of life questionnaire for patients with patellofemoral instability. While good psychometric properties have been demonstrated, the data lack cross-cultural validity, construct validity, and an established measurement error. Purpose: To (1) translate and cross-culturally adapt the BPII 2.0 to the Norwegian version (BPII 2.0–No) and (2) examine the psychometric properties of the Norwegian version. “…A total score is calculated as the average of the responses on each question, range 0-100, where higher scores indicate better QOL [ 19 ]. The Norwegian version of the BPII 2.0 is valid and reliable for patients with PI [ 20 ].…”

“…Recurrent lateral patellar dislocations represent a painful ordeal with a profound impact on patients' lives [ 26 , 57 ]. The disorder is associated with a substantial reduction in knee function [ 9 , 27 , 61 ], persistent pain [ 3 , 61 ], kinesiophobia [ 53 ], activity limitations [ 4 , 26 , 38 , 57 , 58 , 61 ] and diminished health‐related quality‐of‐life [ 4 , 6 , 28 , 38 , 47 , 61 ]. Moreover, recurrent dislocations frequently result in early osteoarthritic changes in the patellofemoral joint, leaving patients dealing with both knee instability and pain [ 2 , 22 ].…”

“…The BPII 2.0 is a Quality of Life (QOL) score ranging from 0 to 100 where a higher score indicates a higher QOL [27]. The Norwegian version is currently in a validation process, so far demonstrating good psychometric properties in several domains [22]. The Kujala score has also been translated and validated in Norwegian [21].…”
