Manufacturing and service companies in different sectors are trying to green their supply chains in two ways: by optimizing processes and by using green technologies such as electric vehicles. Cross-docking offers a good solution for optimizing supply chain processes. The aim of this research is to investigate how cross-docking supply with electric vehicles can lead to energy efficient solutions and emission reduction. The scientific novelty of this research is the integration of a process improvement solution and the application of advanced technology through optimization. The presented functional model, mathematical model and its solution algorithm are suitable to demonstrate the economic feasibility of applying a crossdocking facility and solving the transportation tasks with e-trucks for a conventional supply chain. Based on the numerical studies presented, it can be concluded, that the proposed solution can significantly contribute to the optimization of local and global supply chains, reducing the ecological footprint of supply chains both locally and globally. As the analysis of case studies shows, it is possible to reach an energy efficiency improvement of about 40%, which can also lead to a significant GHG emission up to 30%.

Shipment consolidation is one of main initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions and transportation cost. It reduces the number of shipments per customer and reduces transportation costs by using larger shipments. This paper investigates the temporal consolidation process in a central consolidation center in a make-to-order supply chain. This research was motivated by a case study of a design furniture company that has many suppliers and customers in large parts of Europe. Simulation was used to check the effect of a new and a special time-based temporal consolidation on the response time in outbound logistics. A soft delivery deadline that is less than the average lead time was used because of the long lead time. Arena Software was used to model the supply chain in order to find the best circumstances to use consolidation. Results showed that temporal consolidation could be more effective when order preparation time is with larger variability. The useful waiting is more when there is at least one order every four days. A formula that approximates the percent of reduced shipments was found. Furthermore, many shipments can be reduced without severely affecting the average response time. The value of the study is that it investigates consolidation problems in a high-mix low-volume environment that was overlooked by previous research.

This study introduces a model to solve a dynamic network optimization model on a heterogeneous graph. We use this model to optimize the collection and consolidation operations on a cross-country multi-modal distribution network. The model's dynamic objects are trucks, trailers, orders, unvisited collection and customs check points. Information about dynamic objects is extracted from a real-time database. The model's static objects include objects that are known in advance, such as warehouses. The constraints of the problem include due dates, vehicle capacity, availability of vehicles, and precedence constraints of visiting locations. We propose a mixed-integer programming model and provide a solution using matheuristics. We decompose the master MIP model into subproblems that can be solved to optimality with LP solvers. We also reduce the graph complexity by variable fixing due to optimized subproblems or by bounding the maximum number of paths to be selected due to the solutions of priority-based bin packing algorithms. Finally, we convert the resulting problem into a bipartite matching problem by expanding the graph nodes which can then be solved in polynomial time. We implement our solution method on real-time data retrieved from the tracking system of a third-party logistics company. Experiments show that our solution method significantly outperforms other heuristics in terms of solution quality which is measured with respect to lateness, empty kilometers traveled, travel times, number of required/used vehicles, load factors, and ratio of served orders.
