Cross-layer optimization of Vehicle-to-Vehicle video streaming for overtaking maneuver assistance systems

Abstract: Overtaking maneuver on roads without a clear view can cause serious accident. Hence, real-time video streaming deliveries between two vehicles over Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have been proposed as an overtaking maneuver assistance system. The system is also known as a V2V see-through system since it sends real-time video scenes seeing by a front vehicle to the driver of the back vehicle to help him decide on overtaking maneuver. However, sending real-time video streaming over VANET is still problematic… Show more

“…The cross-layer-based video streaming in vehicular networks is discussed considering the different works performed based on routing, MAC and/or application layer solutions. For example, a V2V video streaming based on Cross-layer Optimization for Overtaking (VCO2) assistance is proposed in order to reduce delay in video packet transmission while improving on-road overtaking safety [12]. A pre-recorded video streaming transmission between vehicles is suggested as a maneuvering system for overtaking assistance.…”

“…Nowadays, the distribution of real-time multimedia content over Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) is becoming a reality and allowing drivers/passengers to have new experiences with on-road videos in a smart city [2,3]. According to Cisco, video traffic will represent over 90% of the global IP data in a few years, where thousands of users will produce, share, and consume multimedia services ubiquitously, including in their vehicles.…”

“…Thus, these delayed frames are not useful in recovering video file at the destination. To this end, the authors in (Puangpronpitag, Kasabai and Suwannasa, 2013) proposed the cross-layer solution for video streaming in a VANET application, which is overtaking assistance system. This V2V application uses windshield camera that mounted on vehicles.…”
