Cross-layer rate control, medium access control and routing design in cooperative VANET

Abstract: In this paper, we address the rate control, the Medium Access Control (MAC) and the routing problem for cooperative Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) in the framework of cross-layer design. At first, we introduce the cooperative communication conception to VANET, and propose an opportunistic cooperation strategy to improve the system performance. And then, we develop a cross-layer solution which consists of the link capacity detection with adjusting persistence probability at the MAC Layer, the flow rate contro… Show more

“…Simulation results show an improved performance for the proposed protocol for both the sparse and dense VANET environments. In [37], authors present detailed architecture of a cross layer based routing scheme for cooperative VANETs. The authors present a cross layer solution that makes routing decisions based on link capacity and adjusting the probability of connectivity at MAC layer accordingly.…”

“…Among these research Zhou et al (2008) proposed a cross layer cooperative VANET with rate and medium access control, they introduced cooperative communication and cross layer link detection at the MAC, network and transport level in order to improve message dissemination and fairness of medium access. However, this system employs the use of roadside units or "gateways" to achieve this aim, this will no doubt add to the overall cost of the VANET architecture and reliance on extra hardware should as much as possible be minimised.…”

“…In this work we focus on traffic safety and efficient warning message dissemination, where the main goal is to reduce the latency and to increase the accuracy of the information received by nearby vehicles when a dangerous situation occurs (Zhou et al, 2008).…”
