Cross‐resistance to purified Bt proteins, Bt corn and Bt cotton in a Cry2Ab2‐corn resistant strain of Spodoptera frugiperda

Abstract: These findings suggest that Cry2Ab2-corn-selected S. frugiperda is not cross-resistant to Cry1F, Cry1A.105 or Vip3A protein, or corn and cotton plants containing these Bt proteins, but it can cause strong cross-resistance to Cry2Ae and Bt crops expressing similar Bt proteins. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…who found no cross‐resistance to Vip3A in three H. virescens populations selected for resistance to Cry1Ac and/or Cry2Ab proteins. Similarly, absence of cross‐resistance to Vip3A proteins has been documented in Cry1F and Cry2Ab2 resistant populations of S. frugiperda in numerous studies . These data suggest that lack of cross‐resistance between Vip3A and Cry proteins is common across insect species.…”

“…In this study, all heterozygous resistant insects of S. frugiperda were killed within 7 days on the leaf tissues of Viptera 3111 plants and 3.16–10 μg/cm 2 diet‐overlay bioassays. In addition, previous studies have reported that larvae of Cry1F‐ or Cry2Ab2‐susceptible, ‐heterozygous, and ‐resistant S. frugiperda could not survive on Viptera 3111 plants . These results suggested that Vip3A is very effective and likely expresses a ‘high‐dose’ for management of S. frugiperda .…”

“…Cry1 proteins show a high level of cross‐resistance to other Bt maize and cotton technologies . In addition, cross‐resistance among Cry2 proteins has recently been reported, and this group also occurs in Bt maize and cotton events in Brazil. Alternatively, vegetative insecticidal proteins (Vips), which also originate from Bacillus thuringiensis , have been used in fall armyworm management.…”
