Cross section for charmonium absorption by nucleons

Abstract: The cross section for J/ absorption by nucleons is studied using a gauged SU͑4͒ hadronic Lagrangian but with empirical particle masses, which has been used previously to study the cross sections for J/ absorption by pion and meson. Including both two-body and three-body final states, we find that with a cutoff parameter of 1 GeV at interaction vertices involving charm hadrons, the J/-N absorption cross section is at most 5 mb and is consistent with that extracted from J/ production from both photonuclear and p… Show more

“…In particular, the observed abnormal suppression of J /ψ in central Pb+Pb collisions at SPS has been attributed to the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in these collisions [150,151]. However, there are other possible mechanisms for J /ψ suppression in heavy ion collisions [152][153][154], e.g., J /ψ may be destroyed by collisions with incoming nucleons or with gluons in the initial partonic matter [155,156] or with comoving hadrons in the hadronic matter [157][158][159][160][161][162][163][164][165][166][167][168][169][170][171].…”

“…The approach used for the in-medium kaon is extended to incorporate the D meson by using gauged SU(4) vector mesons, a method adopted in part from Ref. [21]. The outcome is a Lagrangian similar to Eq.…”

“…One such constraint is the J/ψ absorption cross section by a nucleon, as this process can be viewed as the absorption of J/ψ by the virtual pion and rho meson cloud of the nucleon [20,21]. From J/ψ production in photon-and proton-nucleus reactions, the extracted cross section for J/ψ absorption by a nucleon is a few mb [22].…”
