Cross‐sectional and longitudinal association of sports participation, media consumption and motor competence in youth

Abstract: The beneficial associations of physical activity (PA) and sports with motor competence have been well documented. Similarly, high media time has been associated with poor motor competence. Limited information, however, is available on the combined effects of sport participation and media consumption on motor competence. The present study followed 213 Austrian middle-school students (57% male; age at baseline: 10.4 ± 0.6 years) over a 4-year period. Annual assessments included the German Motor Test 6-18, along w… Show more

“…The positive association between club sports participation and motor competence is consistent with previous research [43,44,45]. Longitudinal studies further indicate that the strength and directionality of the association between motor competence and club sports participation, as well as PA change over time [46,47]. Particularly during adolescence, motor competence appears to be an important facilitator and precursor for participation in sports clubs, while high PA and sports participation may be a prerequisite for motor development during childhood [45,46,47].…”

Particularly during adolescence, motor competence appears to be an important facilitator and precursor for participation in sports clubs, while high PA and sports participation may be a prerequisite for motor development during childhood [45,46,47]. Accordingly, children and adolescents enter either a positive spiral of high PA, including sports participation and increased motor competence, or a vicious cycle of low motor competence and disengagement from sports.…”

“…The present study examined differences in various components of physical fitness and body weight by club sports participation in children and adolescents. Consistent with previous studies, absolute performance on fitness tests increased with increasing age [34,39], which can be attributed to increased body size, changes in body composition and neuromuscular maturation [40]. The differences between club sports and non-club sports participants, however, further indicated beneficial associations of club sports participation with physical fitness, particularly regarding endurance, strength, power and agility.…”

“…An improvement in physical fitness, however, requires prolonged engagement in a sufficient amount and intensity of PA. Accordingly, early engagement in PA is considered a critical component in the promotion of physical fitness [50].…”
